One legendary player that played for the Milwaukee Bucks was Julius Winfield Erving III, commonly known by the nickname Dr. J. His contribution to the sport includes introducing a modern style of play that resembled that of a bird or kangaroo. He literally launched himself into stratosphere before unknown in the sport of basketball. His leaping ability and tendency to play above the rim revolutionized professional basketball. Erving was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. With Michael Jordan, he is considered as one of the most spectacular basketballers ever and one of the greatest dunkers of all time.

Erving acquired his nickname “Dr. J” during his high school years at Roosevelt. His teammates thought that name was appropriate after watching the precision in which he "operated" on the court. After becoming one of only six players in NCAA Men's Basketball history to average more than 20 points and 20 rebounds per game, Erving was ready for the big leagues but the two major leagues, the ABA and the NBA, were not ready for him. Professional basketball was in flux and disorganized. Erving signed as a free agent to the ABA’s Virginia Squires. Like one fantastic player becomes a team, Erving became the league of the ABA. He was the only shining light on a sinking ship. His dunking ability blew every other player out of the water. He averaged scored was 27.3 points per game as a rookie. In 1972, Erving became eligible for the NBA draft and signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. This move to the NBA began “Dr. J’s” ascension through the ranks and into basketball history. He was responsible for the legendary Baseline Move, an incredible behind-the-board reverse lay-up and one of the most spectacular basketballs moves ever. He was also a part of one of the top personal rivalries in basketball, Larry Bird vs. Julius Erving, resulting in a video game, Julius Erving-Larry Bird One-on-One, sealing his fate in pop culture trivia forever. Erving was also one of the first ballers to endorse products including having a shoe marketed under his name.
